From Career Uncertainty to Her Own Fitness Business: Kara Wood’s NHFA Story

At 21, Kara Wood is already building the career she once wasn’t sure was possible.

Today, she owns her own gym and private personal training studio, Vital Strength and Wellness. But just a few years ago, her future looked very different.

Three years ago, Kara experienced a significant health setback that led to two surgeries and a year away from any exercise and sport.

For someone who would eventually build a career around fitness, it was a challenging period that changed the way she thought about her future.

Rather than letting the setback define what came next, Kara began thinking more seriously about the kind of career and life she wanted to build.

Finding a Different Direction

After finishing school, Kara worked traditional 9-5 jobs. Although they provided a familiar career path, she found herself unhappy and drained at the end of each day.

She knew she wanted more from her career.

“I knew that I could do something better with my life and I knew that I wanted to aim higher, achieve more,” Kara says.

Then she came across an NHFA ad about becoming a Personal Trainer.

What happened next was relatively spontaneous.

Kara booked a call with NHFA and soon enrolled in her Certificate III and Certificate IV in Fitness, with her course beginning that same weekend.

From Student to Personal Trainer

While studying, Kara’s career began moving quickly.

She was offered an opportunity to work as a Personal Trainer at Goodlife after being approached by a Personal Training Manager. She spent just under a year building her experience, working with clients and developing her skills as a coach.

Her experience working with clients gave her the confidence and opportunity to build her skills as a coach and eventually consider something bigger: creating a space of her own.

Today, that vision has become Vital Strength and Wellness, a gym and private personal training studio built around the community Kara wanted to create.

Kara also continued developing her knowledge beyond her fitness qualifications, enrolling in NHFA’s Certified Nutrition Coach program.

Building More Than a Business

For Kara, building a successful business was never simply about financial results.

What matters most is the community she is creating and the opportunity to make a difference in people’s lives.

That purpose has become central to the career she has built.

Her journey is a reminder that a fitness career can develop in ways that are difficult to predict when you first begin studying. What starts with a qualification can lead to coaching experience, new opportunities and eventually the confidence to build something of your own.

Kara completed her practical training at NHFA’s North Adelaide campus in 2025. Today, she is putting those skills into practice through her own business and helping other people make positive changes in their lives.

A Career That Changed Direction

Kara’s story began with uncertainty, a major personal setback and the feeling that the traditional career path wasn’t right for her.

It has since taken her into personal training, business ownership and a career centred around helping others.

“NHFA has truly changed my life and now I can help other people change theirs.”

For Kara, becoming a fitness professional wasn’t simply about finding a different job. It was about finding a career that felt meaningful and creating a future around it.

From student to Personal Trainer to business owner, Kara’s journey shows where a fitness qualification can take you when you decide to aim higher.
